The Volga GAZ 24-10 is a Soviet car -- and a poorly built, laughably outdated one. Today I'm reviewing the GAZ 24-10, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a Soviet car that lagged far behind what we had in North America. I'm also going to drive the Volga and show you what it's like on the road.

Oh yeah? This will easily outlast any other car on the road by a giant strech of the imagination Sure No luxery, no fancy electronics or a million safety systems But you can always fix one up quickly if it brakes down It'll run on anything closely related to gasoline And in newer cars, when something brakes, you'll need a bi-directional scantool to proberly diagnose most faults, where you just would need a pair of good ears, eyes and a kind of steady hand Would i use it as a daily driver? no, because the maintainace is high on older cars, but at the same time, it's a billion times easier and can be done by 90% of the population Any modern car can only be fixed by like .00005% of the world population

I'm not sure what all that stuff in the first aid kit is but it seems like a smart idea to have a lot of stuff in it to me, I think a lot of that was for if you got in a crash or maybe broke down or got hurt in a rural area. Honestly it's nice that was included considering that some Americans don't even have first aid kits in their cars.

Yes, while the Volga was not a good car I believe comrade citizen Doug treats it unfairly. Rule no.1, you Never make fun of Russian car climate control. Might look ugly, but you set that puppy to full atomic blitz mode and it will burn a hole in your pants and then melt the hair on your marbles. Or set fire to your beard. Some village people keep this car as a toaster oven. A single dashboard will typically do 25 slices of bread in 3 minutes, a pig roast on the back seat in 45 minutes. Ideal for picnics. In fact, I read somewhere, so it is true, that the Volga is ultimately responsible for climate change. Earthwise, I mean. You know, careless Moscow cab drivers riding around with their windows rolled down. We've all seen 'em do it. I just can't stand these people.

Dude, this car was made also with V8 with 190hp (75-76y). Show some respect. It was made for Russian territory, taigas, tundras and bad roads, Russia is biggest country with enormously different terrain. Maybe its not so good, but it is not laughably bad.

Well... At the time, THIS was a great car... if it where laughable by western standard is beside the point. This car was ROBUST, ok maybe not everything, the major hassle was RUST ... if you look at the logo in front, two simple screws to hold it in place and who ... apart from Americans and Automotive Journalists... who really does care about zero to sixty times ? ... Oh ... one more thing ... having a Ashtray WAS important... because smoking was a luxury 😜

I've been around these "luxury" Volgas through the 90s, I gotta admit it's a bucket of bolts. And noone could afford it, in fact you were not even allowed to buy it, unless you are the member of the party. This apex of Soviet car making, no joke it was pride and joy top achievement, was strictly limited to people someway or somehow related to party or government.

What's so funny about the first aid kit? You said yourself that this car has NO SEATBELTS in the back! Any fender bender could end up at the cementary. And don't count on Soviet ambulances, you would be lucky if they arrive an hour after being called (good luck calling them using the Soviet telephony), and are not dead drunk.

Before you post an overview of this car, you first need to thoroughly understand the object of the report. A lot of blunders. Namely: 1. The peculiarity of the socialist model of the economy is that the product produced by each sector of the economy is aimed at meeting the needs of the final consumer in the absence of competition between producers. This is a serious disadvantage of the system, in comparison with the ideology of the "consumer society" of the capitalist countries of the West. That is why the GAZ-24-10, like many other cars in the USSR, was delayed on the assembly line of state-owned factories for too long, since there were no natural incentives to modernize the model range of cars. 2.The Volga car has never been a "premium" car. In the conditions of the socialist economy, the Volga was indeed a hard-to-reach car for the average citizen. Premium models of Soviet cars are: "Chaika" GAZ-14 and other models of the ZIL plant. They were equipped with a factory-installed V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, premium stereo system, and other options. By the way, the fuel injection system was developed in the USSR in the early 1960s, the workers of TSNITA on the GAZ-21 were installed prototypes of the gasoline supply device in the heart of the car. Which showed themselves well, but unfortunately did not go into the series solely because of problems with the nomenclature. 3. The GAZ-24 car was developed in 1968, initially for a six-cylinder engine, released in several copies. The four-cylinder ZMZ-402 went to the car due to a number of simplifications. Since 1971, it has been put into mass production. 24-10 the latest upgrade of an outdated car design. The exterior of the Volga is typical of the late 1960s and corresponded to the automotive fashion of that historical era. The design is not unusual, classic. The "disadvantages" of the design listed by the author are not at all disadvantages. The air conditioning system, power steering, power windows and automatic transmission are options, and can not be attributed to the shortcomings of the technical characteristics! The engine is lower-shaft, the gas distribution mechanism is made on a textolite gear. It can run on any gasoline, even the worst quality. The maximum passport speed with this engine is 145 km/h. Simple and reliable ignition system, strong undercarriage, strong load-bearing body. Almost any repair can be done independently in the distance from civilization. To help the driver, a 12-volt socket is installed in the engine compartment next to the ignition switch, and there is a portable lamp in the tool kit. The interior heating system allows you to supply heated air to the legs of the rear passengers through the pipes laid under the front seats. To use this option, you need to switch the lower slider of the climate control control to the desired mode. The instrument panel has its own calibration and decoding of the scale gradations in the operating instructions. The concept of engineering solutions is as follows: extreme ease of maintenance of components and assemblies of the car, low cost of production, low cost of consumables and most importantly-reliability and durability. Cars of this brand were operated in the taxi service throughout the USSR. In general, judging by the author's style, the propaganda of the Cold War period and the ideology of the consumer society left its pronounced imprint on the objectivity of perception.

Looking at this car I can hear Borat exclaiming "It's a nice!", BUT I bet the car is reliable, easy to start in extreme wet, hot or cold weather. I imagine the heater will melt lead. I am not a fan of the new computerised cars that I can no longer fix and need a hoist to do normal maintenance on.

VW Beetles in the 1960s had a "Standard" model with ONE sun visor. How many cars have a mirror in each sun visor? Name some! For safety the driver should not have a mirror as they should be watching the road. Modern cars have sloping rear windows that look so shapely but this car can have suitcases put in without getting a hernia. Nowadays we cannot even see the engine in cars as they are covered in plastic to stop us working on them. Next time could we have some objectivity and facts?

You obviously think this is the most hilarious car. I guess I understand that, but I think you could have done a better job learning about why things were done the way they were. Updates to vehicles wasn't always the race it is now. The VW Beetle looked basically the same from the 1940s up until 2003 - that's sixty years without any meaningful redesign of the exterior. The defrost controls are for both the front and rear windows - like you said, it was designed for a country with REALLY cold winters. The seats could recline and formed a sleeping space to two people. Seat belts weren't as important in Soviet countries since there simply weren't many other vehicles on the road to collide with. Waiting for traffic to go by before crossing the street was a rarity even in big cities. The first aid kit has weird looking items to American eyes, but completely normal to many Europeans. The black pills are activated charcoal for when you have the runs. I would guess that the bottles contain topical antiseptic like iodine, motion sickness medicine, smelling salts, etc, all of which were probably required items for the first aid kit when crossing a border (along with a reflective triangle, fire extinguisher, et al.. Roads themselves were (and still are) horrendous by any Western standard so beefiness and simplicity were way more valued by car owners than what we considered luxury. The engine in the Volga was considered extremely low maintenance and simple to work on. Even now I'll bet that the biggest selling "luxury" vehicles in Russia and other post-Soviet countries are SUVs and other vehicles designed for rough roads. Even as primitive as the Volga was, it was truly high end when compared to the other cars available to the average Josef and most likely would only belong to an accomplished doctor, engineer or professor or the director of a factory. Compare it to a Lada or Trabant and the luxury starts to become obvious. Luxury is a subjective target. People from other countries laugh when they find out that you can get through the exterior wall of a typical house with an axe here. They don't care that it's 5000 square feet, it's still cheaply made in their minds.
